about us

October 25, 2019 @ 5:00 pm - 9:00 pm

A collaborative installation between THAT YEAR and Textile Hive.

Koreatown, 1992. Grandpa was the fashionable one, and always helped Grandma with her outfits for church. They never bothered to be too put together at home, but each Sunday they stepped out in one of their matching suit sets which they owned in every color and print imaginable. Oita, 1990. Grandma would cut apart old blankets and unworn clothing, sewing them into new haori, or kimono jackets, at her sewing machine station in the second floor bedroom. Meanwhile, Grandpa is asleep in his chair downstairs, baseball on TV and beer glass empty. New York, 1993. Dad is back from Japan again, and when the suitcase unzips there is another show and tell of clothing discoveries from Tokyo’s avant-garde and vintage shops alike.

For Portland Textile Month, THAT YEAR and Textile Hive will present about us, a collaborative event centered around a large scale installation and an offering of traditional Japanese sweets and tea. The installation utilizes fabrics originating from various parts of Asia, selected from the Textile Hive archive, juxtaposed with personal photographic images printed onto fabric to create a large scale collage. Traditional Japanese sweets by Yume Confections and a special blend of tea by T Project will be served to visitors as part of the installation. about us celebrates the possibility for textiles, or garments more widely, to become vessels for memory and personal history.
