A free 2-day event that includes a Speakers Day and a Community Day.

* Portland Textile Month would like to thank the Pacific Northwest College of Art for being an Event Sponsor of our festival through their gracious in-kind donation of space for this event on behalf of PTM.

October 26-27, 2019

Speakers Day, Saturday 10am – 6pm; doors open at 9:30 am, first come, first seated.

Community Day + Makers Market, Sunday Noon to 4pm.

Day 1: Speakers Day
A forum to discuss the connections between textiles and culture: past, present, and future. Speakers include both heritage keepers and innovators, bringing together artists, costume designers, fashion editors, and all others who work with textiles for an exhibit, keynote speakers, panel discussions, and a Pecha Kucha competition.

Keynote speakers: Palestinian embroidery and culture
Feryal Abbasi-Ghnaim, 2018 NEA National Heritage Fellow
Wafa Ghnaim, author of Tatreez and Tea

Palestinian tatreez embroidery is a centuries-old artistic tradition, passed from mother to daughter over a cup of tea. Feryal and Wafa continue the embroidery tradition with workshops for the Palestinian diaspora community, lectures, and a book that illustrates the connections between Palestinian cross-stitch, storytelling, and culture. Their work embodies the theme of the symposium, bridging generations and cultures through textiles.

Day 2: Community Day + Makers Market
The public is invited to shop at a textiles Makers Market with dozens of vendors, watch traditional and new textile tools demonstrations, find information for textile organizations and the opportunity to connect with people who are passionate about textiles.
